Blackboard Lesson:  Vocabulary Development

A good lesson can be built around a prefix or a root of a word.

For example:  The teacher explains and writes on the board that "aud" is from the Latin and means to hear.

Then the teacher can draw "aud" words from the class, third grade through adult.  Members of the class become very involved and shout out the words that they know.

Together the teacher and the class write the words in syllables: the teacher on the board, the students on their papers.

Teacher:  What is the room to which the whole school goes to see a play?

au di to ri um

Teacher:  What do you call the people who go to see a play?

au di ence

Teacher:  What is the sound part of television called?

Teacher:  What is the word for the occasion when you try out for a part in a play?

Teacher:  What is the word that describes something that can be heard?

au di ble

Teacher:  What is the word that describes something that cannot be heard?
