The Associates Program

The in-school teacher training program of Reading Reform Foundation sends experienced consultants, usually two mornings a week, to train teachers in New York City public elementary school classrooms in the teaching of reading, writing and spelling. These consultants serve as mentors, demonstrating the multisensory phonetic approach, encouraging practice, and conferencing with the teachers on their lesson plans and on their progress with the teaching method.
As Reading Reform Foundation resources permit, candidates for consultant positions, called associates, are interviewed in the spring of a given year. If a candidate is selected as a possible associate, he/she is first required to take a graduate-level course with Reading Reform Foundation in one of two Orton-Gillingham-based methods of teaching reading, writing and spelling.
At the end of the course, the candidate and Reading Reform Foundation staff together evaluate the experience and determine whether the candidate will become an associate for the school year to come. After this determination has been made, an associate spends the academic year in training, paired with an experienced Reading Reform Foundation teaching consultant. Periodic assessments are made through the school year. A final evaluation is made before the candidate becomes a full teaching consultant.
