What is multisensory?

Phonics is more than "sounding out."

"Multisensory techniques" means using all the child's senses to reach all avenues to the brain:

Eyes seeing,
Mouth saying,
Ear hearing
Hand and writing.

Teaching this way reinforces learning and the use of the hand with the eye encourages seeing in the proper left-to-right direction, thereby avoiding reversals of letters.
